Hello !

I have a domaine name and email through OVH and when I first started using it, i set it up through google workspace. I now wish to change from Google workspace to Proton's business mail service and was wondering what the steps were to do this. As it is my work, i really need the transition to be as smooth as possible as I can't have my email down for too long.

Thanks !

Hello,

It is important to plan correctly.

If you domain is hosted with OVH, check and remember: Domains > DNS zone

First edit your MX record(s) and decrease the TTL value to a low value, e.g. 120 (seconds). Doing so, the value cached in various DNS servers around the world is set to expire quickly after retrieval. Later on, when you are ready to change the MX from (Google) to (Proton) , the transition will occur and propagate quickly.

Setup your hosting with Proton, associate your domain name, create all the mailboxes with the exact same name as today.

On OVH console, edit your SPF record to add the entry suggested by Proton next to the entry required by Google, in the same record. Otherwise you could encounter difficulties sending e-mails from Proton.

Make some tests, send some e-mails from Proton to various recipients outside your domain name.

Explain to your users how to access their Proton mailbox.

When ready, change the MX in the DNS zone, and all new e-mails will now drop in their Proton mailbox. No e-mail would be lost in the operation.

Afterwards you may want to migrate all the old e-mails from their Google mailbox towards their Proton mailbox, if they decide to do so.
