My system is Debian, Debian sent me the password via email. But when I logged in for the first time using the username debian and password, the system prompted me to change my password. When I changed my password, it prompted:
Debian GNU/Linux comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent
permitted by applicable law.
WARNING: Your password has expired.
You must change your password now and login again!
Changing password for debian.
Current password:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
passwd: password unchanged
How do I change my password?
I need help logging in for the first time

I have the same problem but with ubuntu
For the first time you receive an email with a link which generates a password to login through SSH to your VPS. This password is avlaid for a week a think but needs to be cahnged right after you log into your VPS.
Hope this helps.
I’ve resolved resetting the password in recovery mode as indicated by the help center.
