Hi, Salut,
The underlying reason is that my outgoing serveur is offline.
How to migrate in Mail/Mac an account from POP to IMAP? Can I have the Incoming Server still POP whilst the Outgoing server is SMTP?
I am concerned that deleting and resetting the account will make me loose all the inbox content.
Hello,
I have bad news for you.
Check your POP settings, the is usually a tick box for leaving the incoming messages in the mailbox, or not, or for a limited amount of time.
If they are not kept in the server inbox, the only copy is stored on your mac.
If you remove your POP account you will probably lose all your e-mails.
The way of working of POP3 is similar to the paper mail. The incoming messages are dropped in your mailbox. You open the mailbox, you retrieve all your mail, the mailbox is now empty. Nothing remains on the server. The server does not keep the sent items. There is no filing in folders, too.
POP3 is not adequate if you intend to fetch your mail from more than one device. If you set the option to keep all the messages on the server, you will generate duplicates, without keeping any status read/unread.

On the other hand, SMTP is required for sending e-mails, as neither POP or IMAP can send e-mails.
SMTP is thus used in conjunction with either POP or IMAP.
Merci / thanks FritzLeChat,
My issue is not with the inbox (I do receive emails), but with sending emails out from my Mac (though not an issue from my iPhone, which was setup later directly with SMTP).
