Domain management in OVH manager after 3rd party migration: DNS zones & MX

Hello,

Historically we managed our domain names and the linked DNS zones in OVH Manager. For some domain names, we purchased DNS Anycast. No domain name has a MX plan associated but there is always something about this in "billing and offers". I currently have this for each domain name:

We decided to change this and handle the DNS zones with a 3rd party supplier.
First question: is it safe to delete "DNS zones" when DNS servers are changed ?

No DNS Anycast would be needed anymore. Now, how can I proceed to delete immediately:

  • All DNS Anycast services immediately.
  • All DNS zones from OVH.
  • All MX plan reference.

I did some tests on a domain name and for MX cancellation I tried these options:

But always have this output:

About DNS zone, I tried to Cancel the service and have this for 2 weeks:

Note: service is suppose to expire on 01/06/2027, maybe should I way until this date ?

To make it easier and sum up: all I want is domain names registration (with DNS servers pointing to a 3rd party for handling DNS zones) and nothing else anymore. Is there an easy and quick way to clean everything ?

Hello @DeltaSM

To proceed with the removal of Anycast DNS, I invite you to create a support ticket or contact OVHcloud support, as an internal action is required to terminate this offering.

To delete a DNS zone, you can set it to "manual renewal", so that at its expiration date it will be suspended and then automatically deleted.

Regarding MXplan redirect (default redirection offer), they disappear at the same time as the domain names when those are deleted.

For Anycast DNS, feel free to give me the ticket number if you open one

Astérix

Hello @Asterix

Regarding DNS Anycast, I will create a ticket. Is it consider as technical or another category in this case ?

About DNS zone, you confirm it can be safely set to manual renewal without any risk the break the relationship between the domain name and 3rd party DNS zone management ?

So MXplan always remains if a domain name is present at OVH ?

Regards

Hi,

I’m daring to jump in here :winking_face_with_tongue:, to answer your questions @DeltaSM ;

You can open it however you like, the team will know how to forward it to the team that can delete it.

No, it will only affect when the domain or DNS zone’s expiration date arrives.

MX Redirect plans remain as long as the domain’s DNS zone exists in OVHcloud. Both free products go hand in hand.

Thanks for feedback @GabriDB

One more precision about his question:

About the DNS zone, can you confirm that it can be safely set to manual renewal without risking breaking the relationship between the domain name and third‑party DNS zone management?

What I want to know is: if for example.com (which is purchased until 2030) I removed the DNS zone (through manual renewal which I will let expire), it won't break anything for the DNS zone handling through the 3rd party supplier ? It only remove DNS zone and MX plan from OVH but domain name is still at OVH until 2030 and I can manage it through a 3rd party by changing DNS servers ?

Is it correct ?

That's correct!

If you have delegated zone management to other servers or a provider from your domain control panel, deleting the DNS zone in OVH will not affect resolution. Both products operate independently, in that respect.
