I am new to the "forum" and I have a rather serious problem with my WordPress site, www.le50-duplex.fr.
I am a complete beginner. Building a site was very difficult for me. I chose OVH's one‑click module.
Apparently, on August 20 a automatic update could not be applied to my WordPress site.
I just realized, while trying to make a correction on one of my pages, that I no longer have access. The page shows a critical error. I contacted OVH support and opened a ticket, but they told me I have to figure it out myself. They mentioned a 500 error and told me to turn to this help forum.
So I turned to Gemini to try a solution, but I couldn't get anything to work.
Deactivate all plugins and then re‑activate them one by one.
This will reveal the faulty plugin.

the issue stems from the attempt to automatically update to WordPress version 7.1.
The update did not finish completely. You need to do it manually by downloading WordPress 7.1 and uploading it to the same location on the host (overwriting the existing files).
To resolve this critical error issue, I invite you to restore a backup of your site to a date when it was functional and accessible:
Step 1 of 6: Click your domain under the “Hosting” section, Step 2 of 6: Go to the “FTP‑SSH” tab, Step 3 of 6: Click “restore a backup”, Step 4 of 6: Go to “database”, Step 5 of 6: On the right side of your database, click the three little dots, Step 6 of 6: Click the three dots to the right of the desired backup to restore it.
Once the site is functional and accessible as of the desired date, you can sort your WordPress plugins and theme, update them, and delete any unused ones. This will allow you to proceed with updating WordPress :wink:
Thanks, I followed the instructions you gave, but I had to install the full version of WordPress that I downloaded from wordpress.org, upload it via FileZilla to the www folder, overwriting the previous version with the new one. Everything is back to normal now. Thanks
I read your guide and thank you; it is really thorough and I regret not having had this amazing tool when I was building my website. It is highly recommended.
I then followed Asterix’s advice, but that wasn’t enough. So I installed Copilot on my Windows—here’s the link https://copilot.microsoft.com/—and I followed those tips as well, such as creating a folder on my desktop to download the WordPress theme from wordpress.org.
Once downloaded and extracted on my desktop, I copied everything into FileZilla in the WWW folder, overwriting what was there and putting the new version, and voilà, that was the real solution, in addition to the advice I received on the forum.
Now I’ll follow your instructions to back up my site using your guide.
