Hard drive quota issue and Apache restart

Hello experts,

My site statuesparadise.com is inaccessible (cannot connect from a browser). The problem, a 500 error, occurred after exceeding the disk quota (now fixed, back to 99.81 GB / 100 GB).

FTP is working and DNS is OK.
I cannot modify the multisite (OVH error).

OVH support tells me it's a configuration issue, not an infrastructure one, so they can't do ANYTHING and they send me a list of providers to consult, as well as this forum. In short, they wash their hands of it!

Using Grok and ChatGPT to analyze the error messages from the OVH admin site, both tell me that the web services (Apache) need to be restarted. Problem: it's impossible for support to do that and I don't see how to do it in the OVH administration site; I even think it's impossible.

Can you tell me how to fix all this?

Thanks for your valuable advice :-)

David

Hello,

You say "now fixed, back to 99.81 GB / 100 GB "

I don't call that fixed. Go back to 90 GB, not 99.8 GB.

I suppose you have an idea why it fills up? It's like a bathtub: if the faucet keeps running, it will overflow again...

FileZilla in SFTP mode is your friend.

Hello fritz2cat,

Thanks for your response.

Why go back to 90 GB? I'm 200 MB below the limit, what's the point of gaining 10 GB, protecting against automatic backups that will again exceed the limit?

I've disabled all my plugins, so there won't be any backup with backwpup.

If it filled up, "normally" it's all my posts containing photos.

Hi fritz2cat,

Thanks for your feedback.

Why do you want to earn 10 GB when I'm no longer updating my site? I've disabled the plugins, so there are no backups related to them. I think the size won't change any more.

If it's filled up, it's because I've apparently created too many posts (500 with thousands of photos totalling 5 MB).

I access my hosting with Filezilla without any issues.

Are you serious, right?

> I disabled the plugins, so there are no backups related to them anymore.

So you keep a bunch of old backups that are completely useless just to stay at 99.9% of your usage.

  • 500 posts → let's say 1 MB
  • thousands of photos totalling 5 MB: 5 MB
  • thousands of photos each 5 MB: 5 GB per thousand photos

and you're using 99.9 GB! ??

When you hit over‑quota, you may have broken your site after a failed update.

But it's up to you. There's nothing to add.

I find you aggressive... but oh well, I went to check my backups on the site via FTP and... yeah, still: 80 GB!!!!!

The last one wasn’t the same size as the others, it’s probably the one that broke something…

Alright, I’m keeping on looking with Grok, ChatGPT (really good this time) and pestering support.

I took the chance to clean up another website that had the same issue but is still working, phew!

Yes, I admit I was a bit aggressive.

It's not normal to want to persist with an abnormal situation.

Moreover, those backups are a trap. If the site is hacked, the hacker has access to everything in the hosting and destroys everything, including the 500 backups. Game over.

Well, in any case I've noted in my To‑Do List to check the backup list on my sites once a month :-)
