Merci

Hello,

I’m following up on the same post title:
I am using IMAP on both of my PCs and on my smartphone.
I use Outlook.
I notice a lack of synchronization between my two PCs and my smartphone for the folder “Sent Items”.

I also notice in the “Roundcube” interface that I have two folders:

  • Sent Items
  • send

Why do I have two folders?
Why do I have a synchronization issue in the “Sent Items” folder?
Why are some emails stored in the “Sent Items” folder of “Roundcube” and others in the “Sent” folder of INBOX in “Roundcube”?

I want to restructure the presentation of my email folders. Hence my question about the presence of sub‑folders under INBOX with a hierarchy: Drafts, Junk, Sent, Trash

Thanks for your answers

Hi @YanisB3

On OVH IMAP servers, the standard folders (Sent, Drafts, Spam, Trash) are usually structured in a specific way, often as subfolders of INBOX (e.g., INBOX.Sent). However, Outlook has its own logic and sometimes creates its own folders at the root of the server (e.g., “Sent”, “Sent Items”), without the “INBOX.” prefix. As a result you end up in the same situation you’re experiencing.

The solution isn’t to delete folders, but to tell all your email clients which folder they should use for each function.

  • In webmail go to Settings > Preferences > Special folders. Here, assign the folder that contains your sent messages (for example, the one that holds all emails) as ‘Sent’. Do the same for Drafts, Spam and Trash.
  • In Outlook, when you set up the IMAP account, look for a similar option called ‘Folders’ or ‘Advanced options’. There you can manually choose the folders Outlook should use for “Sent Items”, “Drafts”, etc. Make sure it points to the same folder you configured in your webmail.

Let us know how it goes, cheers.

The answer above is completely accurate.

Furthermore, you should know that Outlook “breaks” the IMAP protocol conventions by creating folders on the server in the local language, whereas the convention is to use the folders in English but display them in the local language.

You can see with Roundcube that the folder Pourriels is actually the Junk folder on the server.

If you change the language, the underlying folder remains the same.

However, Outlook will create a new folder in the newly chosen language.

Hello @Sergio Turpín

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for providing a response.

First of all, thanks for the clear explanation of the situation. I was able to act on the webmail side by going to Configuración > Preferencias > Carpetas especiales
As for Outlook, I will figure out the action to take and will give you a complementary answer. Indeed, I need to make sure that the Outlook folders point to the same folders I have configured on my webmail.

@fritz2cat Thanks for the explanation of how Outlook works, which “breaks” the IMAP protocol conventions by creating folders on the server in the local language.

--> I need to target the Outlook side to regularize this.

Thank you both for your constructive answers
