VPS-2 LZ 2027: Unacceptable slowdowns and unstable Ubuntu

Pretty satisfied with OVH so far, especially with the 2 other VPS that work very well.
But on September 23, I ordered a new VPS‑2, running Ubuntu 26 (located in Zurich).

The system becomes inaccessible after setting up SSH. Strange, but okay.
Requested a reinstall from the manager: had to wait several hours.
Tried an installation with Ubuntu 24, then upgrade to 26: crash during the upgrade.
VPS inaccessible. Booted into rescue mode: several hours of waiting.
Had to request a reinstall again. More hours of waiting.
A simple reboot from the manager: hours of waiting.
No KVM during any of the operations. And when it finally works, the keyboard layout is US.

In the email received:
Finally, if you encounter a malfunction with your VPS,
you can report an incident 24/7:

https://www.ovh.com/fr//fr/support/declarer_incident.xml

That link returns a 404.

Please help: I want a stable Ubuntu 26 server. No more, no less.

With the other VPS at OVH, everything is fast. Why isn’t this one?

Hello,

Before throwing in the towel, here are some technical steps to take back control and diagnose the issue:

1. Lost SSH access:

Use the emergency KVM/VNC console available in your client area to connect directly locally (out‑of‑band). Once logged in as root:

- Check the SSH service status: systemctl status ssh or journalctl -u ssh -xe.

- Verify the config has no syntax errors: sshd -t.

- Check the local firewall in case it blocks the port: ufw status or nft list ruleset.

- See if fail2ban hasn't banned you by mistake if you have it enabled.

2. Abnormal slowness:

Again via the KVM console, see if it's due to a noisy neighbor or hypervisor overload:

- Run top and monitor the %st metric (CPU Steal). If this percentage is high, the physical host is overloaded.

That’s the kind of problem we avoid and keep a close eye on at Plennyx!

Unfortunately, you don't have any guarantee about the host's processors that will host your VPS... It's kind of a lottery.
If you want to be sure, you get a bare‑metal server and run your KVM VMs on it.
Personally that's what I do (and I have to deal with the hardware problems because of it).

Hello,

I have a similar issue. A new VPS was delivered, installed with 26.04. I run apt update then upgrade and it crashes at console-setup. SSH becomes inaccessible and I have to reinstall or restore a snapshot.

The same behavior occurs after a full reinstall with 26.04 still installed. I don’t experience this on a local Ubuntu image. It’s frankly odd.
