Creating a DNS zone associated with a web hosting

Hello,

I have a Domain and Web hosting plan with OVH. Currently, there is no DNS zone created (the Web hosting must have initialized a zone that isn’t accessible in the DNS Zone tab).

I have the “Activate my zone” option. I would like to know whether this option creates a blank zone that I will have to repopulate, or whether it will be initialized to allow continuity of my web service?

Additionally, can the technical contact modify this zone? (Note: The Hosts tab is not available to me).

Hello

A bit of reading:

Hello,

Ignore Gaston's reply below, which is probably irrelevant.

If you don't have a DNS zone created, it's probably because it already exists, but under another OVH client account.

What is the domain name?

Hello @cc46dae9ac6d9259616d

To link your domain name to your hosting, you will need to activate your DNS zone and then configure it to connect the two services as follows:

Step 1 of 4: Click on your domain name under the “Domain name” section,
Step 2 of 4: Go to the “DNS Zone” tab and activate the DNS zone,
Step 3 of 4: Click the three dots next to the A record, choose “edit” and replace the IP with the IPv4 address shown in the general information of your hosting,
Step 4 of 4: Click “Next” then “Validate”,

Note:

  • IF your DNS zone contains two A‑type entries for your primary domain name, both entries must point to this IPv4 address.
  • IF your DNS zone contains two AAAA‑type entries for your primary domain name, both entries must point to this IPv6 address.
  • A DNS propagation period is required for these changes to take effect; this period varies from 4 to 24 hours.
  • Our documentation: https://help.ovhcloud.com/csm/fr-dns-edit-dns-zone?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0051684

Once done, you will be able to enable SSL on your hosting by following these steps:

Step 1 of 4: Click on your hosting under the “Hosting” section
Step 2 of 4: Go to the “SSL Certificate” category,
Step 3 of 4: Select your domain name(s) in the “Enable SSL certificate” field by checking the appropriate box(es),
Step 4 of 4: Click the “Enable SSL certificate” button

Then wait for the certificate to be generated.

Hello, the domain is forum-hifi.fr. In the list of domains in my account, there’s only that one (I don’t know why; there might be another zone associated with a different account). I am the technical contact and I don’t see much about this. The admin contact sees the redirects (mapped as CNAME) and the hosts (mapped as A). Curious, these are typically things a technical contact should see.

Hello,

This domain has existed since 2015.

It has been with OVH since June 2022 or even earlier.
Its DNS servers have been, since that date: ns200.anycast.me and dns200.anycast.me

Has there been a domain transfer between two OVH customers? If so, the person who transferred the domain and hosting to you omitted to transfer the DNS zone.

Hello,

It's an inherited situation. I don't have control over the history… how can I ensure the transfer?

(Create the zone on OVH, but how to have this zone taken into account by the OVH DNS?)

A WHOIS lookup indicates that my registrar is indeed OVH.

You say you act as “TECH”. Coordinate with the person who is “ADMIN” for this domain.

However I don’t know what the “TECH” could do on the DNS zone if they are not “ADMIN”.
The information found in the OVH guide is not clear: https://docs.ovhcloud.com/fr/guides/web-cloud/domains/dns-zone-edit

The difficulty is that there are operations such as a service migration that require touching the DNS… and I don’t see the point of technical rights if that isn’t possible. It’s not like transferring a domain from one registrar to another, which is more sensitive.

I just saw that the anycast servers depend on OVH. No migration is necessary.

Let's go back to the beginning then, what operation do you need to perform on the DNS?

Did you receive an Admin or Tech role on the “DNS zone” component? (Check “contract management” for confirmation.)

Okay, the problem is that as a technical contact, I can’t do anything with the domain… not even view the zone (I’m being prompted to create it even though it already exists). It makes sense that I can’t transfer it, but having no access makes me wonder what the technical contact is for.

My goal was simply to create a host in the zone.

Indeed! That’s why now, when you change the contact on a domain name, it also proposes to change the contact for the DNS zone as well

But it's strange to see the zone‑creation option (as if it didn't exist) instead of a message stating that the view is reserved.

Also, what is this notion of a zone contact that differs from a domain contact? To me, the contact is at the service (domain) level and affects the various aspects (zone, DNS server…)

The holder of a domain knows where the DNS servers are. At OVH or elsewhere.
The holder of the DNS zone knows where the web, mail servers, etc. are.

Conversely, you can also very well have a domain registered with someone other than OVH, but the DNS zone hosted at OVH.

What you find illogical therefore makes sense and you must accept its apparent complexity.
