Folders created via Webmail are invisible in IMAP

Hello,

I manage a client's email (Email Pro plan) and need help before starting a migration.

Context

We need to migrate the account to the OVH Exchange plan. Before doing that, I wanted to make a full backup of the mailbox from Outlook on Windows (the client uses it via IMAP).

The client originally used Outlook on Windows, where they had created several folders to organize their emails (one folder per client). For the past few months, they have been using the OVH Webmail instead, and have created new folders there.

When trying to make my backup, I realized that the folders created from Webmail do not appear at all in Outlook, even after a complete synchronization. Result: the emails contained in those folders are also invisible from Outlook.

Conversely, the folders originally created from Outlook (the older ones) are present, with all their emails. The issue therefore only affects the folders created more recently from Webmail.

The strange behavior

I tried manually creating in Outlook a folder with the same name as an existing folder on Webmail. Result:

  • The emails in the folder appear in Outlook at first
  • But the folder disappears on its own after a few seconds
  • And the emails do not end up in the inbox either

Our concern

We are afraid of losing emails during the migration to Exchange if these folders and their emails are not visible/synchronized correctly via IMAP.

My question

Has anyone encountered this problem before?
Is there a procedure to ensure these folders and emails are properly accounted for before the migration or to make a full backup before the migration?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Guillaume

Hi @977f1af153ef84fb8ac9

Yes, it's a conflict between the webmail folder hierarchy

What you could do to solve it is reconfigure Outlook to show the subfolders of INBOX:

  • In Outlook, add the IMAP account again, but in the setup step, look for the "Advanced Settings" or "Server Options" option.
  • In the "Root folder path" field, type INBOX. This makes Outlook treat the INBOX folder as its starting point and display all its subfolders.

Hope I helped, let us know

Thank you for your help!

I tried your solution with Thunderbird and in the settings I came across an option: "Show only subscribed folders".
I unchecked this option, restarted Thunderbird, and the folders finally appeared.

If this can help anyone, you never know.

Guillaume

You're welcome!

I'm glad you were able to find the solution. I'm taking note of how you solved it
