IPMI/KVM Problem

Hello,

Before ordering a new dedicated server, we would like to confirm an important point.

We need a server model that supports:

  • an IPMI/KVM console via Java (JNLP / Java Applet)

  • a stable and reliable ISO Virtual Media mount

  • a full remote KVM functionality

We are currently experiencing limitations with the HTML5‑only KVM implementation on another OVHcloud server.

Could you let us know which current OVHcloud dedicated server ranges or models still offer:

  • Java iKVM / JViewer support

  • a reliable ISO Virtual Media

  • preferably a platform based on a Supermicro BMC/IPMI

Our main requirement concerns the installation and administration of specialized systems that need a perfectly functional remote ISO mount.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Best regards,
Fidèle

@le_sbraz should be able to answer you precisely, I think.
Personally I now use "Serial over LAN (SoL)" with an RSA key—very effective and reliable in a regular console.
Available on all the servers I have, from KS to Advance.

Hello,
I can already bring back the message sent on April 28, 2026 to the sd‑pro mailing list:

For our baremetal offerings T3 Advance, T4 Scale and T5 High Grade, the features related to the BMC, including the BMC KVM, are guaranteed (in first life).

On the waterfall of these offerings for several years now (2020 or later) for KS and SYS and RISE OLD, you therefore have this inherited feature but it is not advertised as guaranteed; unless these servers are deployed in older infrastructures, the function remains OK.

This is not the case for T2 RISE‑S/M/L, which was built without this option on a large part of the range.

You are installing non‑standard OSes that require an ISO? They don’t install via iPXE, for example?

Hello TTY, thanks already for this feedback. While waiting for @le_sbraz to respond, can you tell me how you proceed with "Serial over LAN (SoL)"? Is it possible to launch the installation of an OS via an ISO image on a new server? If so, what is the procedure?

@fideletchoumba I replied earlier just above.

The SOL replaces the KVM console by providing a serial console (where you can copy‑paste text, for example) but does not allow mounting an ISO. However, what I recommend, if possible, is to install the OSes via iPXE scripts, for example with https://netboot.xyz/.
In this mode of operation, iPXE downloads the installers from the Internet, which is much faster than downloading an ISO via the BMC.

Hello le_sbraz,

Actually I want to install the sippysoft softswitch on a SYS-1 in Gravelines. The KVM is present, but the ISO image doesn't load completely and gets stuck at 87 KB even though the image is actually 58 MB. Curiously, I can upload a 1 GB ISO via the same server's KVM from a tiny CentOS 7 instead. I even tried BYOI, but it doesn't support the ISO format. Sippy support is ready to take control to perform the installation, provided the ISO loads and the installation can be started.

Thank you for your response

And does the ISO work on another machine? If so, you could potentially contact support. They can at least verify that the BMC firmware is up to date.

@le_sbraz the ISO loads fine on a local VM and the installation starts, but sippy support requires a dedicated server to proceed with the installation.

Hello,

I finally found a server that supports KVM via a Java applet, the SYS‑2 | Intel Xeon‑D 2141I, but the installation fails with the following error:
"Fatal Error — Installation data is corrupted. Please check that the installation image has been downloaded in full and that the boot media contains no errors."

It’s a soft‑RAID server and I think that’s the problem. I contacted Sippy support and their response is below:
Hello Fidele,
**
I've tried uploading different ISO listed below, however the result is still the same shown on screenshot.**

https://bit.ly/sippy2023
https://bit.ly/sippy2023_debug
https://bit.ly/sippy2024

**
We use those ISO regularly and we're sure they are working ones.

Something is wrong with this server. Do you happen to know how to open RAID controller settings for us to review current RAID setup?**

Can you recommend an OVH server that supports hardware RAID?

Thanks in advance

Do you have a filter for that on the site:
